Brazil have more ways to win. Norway have Haaland.

This is not just Brazil nostalgia, though the mood around them has changed. The current conversation has moved from crisis to Ancelotti's calm, from Neymar dependence to Vinicius Junior as the centre of gravity, and back toward the old question: when does the front line start looking like Brazil again?

It is getting there. Vinicius has four goals. Neymar is cleared to play 90 minutes if needed. And with Japan still level in the 95th minute last round, substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored the latest normal-time winner a World Cup knockout has seen since 1966.

Norway earned this stage too. They beat a strong, very capable Côte d'Ivoire side 2-1 after Antonio Nusa put them ahead, Amad Diallo levelled it, and Haaland settled it in the 86th minute. That matters here: it was exactly the kind of one-touch punishment that makes every Brazil turnover feel louder.

There is history underneath it. Marseille, 1998, group stage: Norway 2, Brazil 1. Norway then lost to Italy in the last 16. The Côte d'Ivoire result was Norway's first knockout win at a major tournament and their first knockout appearance since that World Cup. A 28 year old memory has become a live opponent again.

The upset case is real, so I wouldn't fake certainty. Norway have out-created Brazil by xG, 9.89 to 7.36. Their shots have been worth 0.225 xG each to Brazil's 0.134. Haaland is the reason a small window can feel like an open door in any game he plays.

Brazil are still the clear pick because their advantages are more repeatable. They get there more often, from more angles, and with a group of diverse players. Wyscout view backs that up: Brazil have 9.8 deep completions per 90 to Norway's 6.2, and allow 8.1 shots per 90 to Norway's 12.1.

Being honest about Brazil's defensive record too - two goals conceded flatters them against 4.16 xGA, so this is not a wall. But the shot profile still matters. Brazil allow fewer attempts and lower value looks, 0.112 xG per shot against to Norway's 0.132.

That is the difference between fear and structure. Norway have the striker everyone fears. Brazil have more ways to break a team down.

The match could tilt if Odegaard spends the first half receiving forward, not rescuing attacks from deep. Keep it level past the hour and Brazil's European knockout scar starts humming too - they have not beaten a European side in a World Cup knockout since 2002.

But if the territory gap shows up early, the game is running to script. Haaland will probably get one moment. Brazil's bet is that one moment is not enough.

Brazil 3-1 Norway. One for the striker. More for the team with more ways to win.
